Thursday, May 16th found a large crowd in downtown Angels Camp ready to witness and enjoy, once again, the Youth Parade — now in it’s 65th year — and hosted continuously since 1947 by Soroptimist International (SICC)
SICC hosts this parade which kicks off the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee – running from May 16th through May 19th this year. Individuals, families, and groups participated in 2013’s parade and parade attendees, though a little damp from the rain showers, seemed to enjoy every entry!
The parade staged at Utica Park and the parade began promptly at 10AM. Leading off was our own Angels Camp Police Department followed closely behind by Cub Scout Troop #343 who provided our color guard displaying the flags of our country and state.
This year’s theme is “Country Roots and Cowboy Boots” –gave entrants plenty of ideas to incorporate into their entries. There were two pre-school floats each decorated to carry out the fair’s theme. The Calaveras Marching Band provided lively music to the delight of parade viewers. Beautifully dressed Miss Calaveras County 2012 winners rode in a red convertible. Junior Miss 2013 winners, recently chosen, rode on the Altaville/Melones fire truck. Boots were in evidence everywhere you looked!
Two dance groups kept the crowd entertained and caused foot tapping along the parade route. A very, large float displaying large boots carried a multitude of children — sitting on hay bales –all of whom seemed to be having a great time. An elementary school class added their music to the festivities by strumming their ukuleles and singing along. There were frogs, princesses, Smokey the Bear and much more.
Below are a smattering of photos that depict the atmosphere of the day and demonstrate how each one carried out this year’s theme of “Cowboy Boots and Country Roots!”
